The end of the better mousetrap?

‚Build a better mousetrap and the world will beat a path to your door‘, said Ralph Waldo Emerson. ‚No more‘, I think.

Look at the McDonalds Big Mac Commercial from 1975. I ate a Big Mac yesterday and it looks pretty much the same. The product did not change. The company did.

Have a look at McDonald’s self-service machines in Switzerland here.

The Big Mac did not change – everything else around the product did change a lot, and the organisation McDonald was able to evolve and survive.

Wienerwald, my favourite place for lunch as a kid peaked in 1978 with 1.600 restaurants employing over 30.000 people. Do people still eat chicken and fries? Sure they do – but not at Wienerwald.

It’s not the product. It’s not the mousetrap. It’s the evolving organisation that wins.

We all better change. How to change better? This is what this blog is all about. I advocate methodologies by Fritz Zwicky and Prosci®.
